HUNI Historic Urban Neighborhoods of Indianapolis
HUNI advocates for neighborhoods and cultivates community rooted in historic preservation.
Overview
Historic Urban Neighborhoods of Indianapolis (HUNI) is a not-for-profit advocacy group supporting the preservation, revitalization, and interests of Indianapolis’ urban historic neighborhoods.
They engaged in a complete redesign of their first ever website, launched in 2011.
I had been involved with this organization for several years, knew how passionate their people were and the kinds of positive change they've been able to affect, and was proud to partner with them and undertake this project in a volunteer capacity.

The project
Build something for the future while honoring and celebrating achievements of the past.
The objective here was to deliver a brand-new, modern website while preserving much of the content and honoring the existing brand.
The new site included a new information architecture strategy, completely revamped visual design, and the embracing of modern web standards like accessibility and responsive design.
The previous site lived online for just over a decade—a high bar. Realizing the resource limitations of volunteer-based non-profit groups, this new site had to be flexible and extensible enough to be able to live and grow along with the organization's needs—without the need for costly involvement of designers and developers.
The Solution
With some high-level goals established, we set out defining the objectives:
- Visual design should be clean and modern, while also respecting the traditional nature of the brand
- Information architecture should organize content and help users easily browse and consume pages across the site
- Both the site's design and information architecture needed the flexibility to scale and grow along with the organization
- In addition to the organization's brand, the site should celebrate the member neighborhoods by featuring unique, original imagery
- Embrace modern underpinnings, including better accessibility, responsive design, and search engine optimization
- The site needed a modern content management system to facilitate easy content creation and management
